Where we are and how to get here

1. PORTO MARAVILHA

Sangha Urbana is located at an area called “Porto Maravilha”, a region which has been revitalized once the city was getting ready to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Rio’s docks highly benefited from this effort, being transformed into the Olympic Boulevard. It is an urban area of 5 km2 (2 mi2) bordered by Avenues Presidente Vargas, Rodrigues Alves, Rio Branco and Francisco Bicalho, covering no less than 5 neighborhoods (Caju, Gamboa, Saúde, Santo Cristo and part of the city center/downtown). Besides many commercial shops, restaurants, bars and city life, this vast region hosts not only the Olympic Boulevard but also the AquaRio Aquarium, Rio’s Ferris Wheel, Eduardo Kobra’s famous graffiti art… it’s all here, at Porto Maravilha!

2. CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB)
We are less than 10 minutes away on foot to Rio de Janeiro’s CCBB. This cultural center was inaugurated in 1989, assigning new purpose to a beautiful neoclassic building from 1906. Since then, it has become one of Brazil’s most important cultural centers. Hosting exhibition galleries, cinema rooms and a theater hall, the venue offers a busy and dynamic cultural schedule.
  • Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow)
We are less than 10 minutes away on foot to the Museu do Amanhã. This architecturally interesting museum will get you acquainted with the conceptual perspectives on the anthropocene period, and invite you to reflect further about it. The permanent exhibition is visually appealing, highly informative and interactive. Never heard of the Anthropocene? It is a new geological period which Earth, our Mother Ship, has been going through. Human action has been changing how the planet’s natural flows operate, as we are now capable of enforcing relevant/disruptive changes in Earth’s natural cycles. Go visit the museum, then come back to Sangha Urbana and meditate. The planet desperately needs many people connected with themselves so that they can finally connect to the “mother ship”.
  • Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) – (Rio’s Art Museum)
We are less than 10 minutes away on foot to the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR). MAR was inaugurated on March 1st, 2013, as a space dedicated to promoting knowledge and reflection about Rio de Janeiro’s history. This museum aims to offer a cross-cutting perspective on the city’s history, as well as on its social tissue, symbolic life, contradictions, challenges and social expectations.
  • “Ethnicities”, graffiti by Eduardo Kobra
We are located shortly over 10 minutes away on foot to the “Ethnicities” panel, also known locally as Kobra panel.
  • Real Gabinete Português de Leitura (Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading)
We are located shortly over 20 minutes away on foot to the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading. Google it up – even if you can’t read Portuguese much, the inner part of the building is worth a peek!
